THERE are NIGHTS like THIS...

There are nights like this,
owl soft and hung
with sheep song, when
the larches on Sunrising
slant limb-wise on
westerly winds, that lying
here upon this mossy
backbone, scented with cow
and gorse and the cold wet
earth, I know with all certainty
that, unless I dig my fingers
deep into the knotted roots
of grass at my side, I would fall

Upwards into the blackness
of the sky, trailing cold
star-fire through my outstretched
fingers.

makes me think of carl sagan - "the nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. we are made of starstuff.”

your words leave me in two minds...dig deeper and hold on, or let go and fulfil your potential...

    1. Hey there you!!
That's a brilliant comment :) I hadn't thought of it as a choice. Yes which action would be the better? Gosh, I am seeing this whole post in a totally new way - and it makes a lot more sense... though that choice still remains...
That is a wonderful quote form Carl Sagan...
... hey did you know that the centre of our galaxy ethyl formate can be found which means... the centre of our galaxy tastes of raspberries and smells of rum!! How wonderful is that?!

    1. The deepest longings are for those things for which we still have no words.

  5. A beautiful sigh of remembrance. Reminiscing now of lovely nights long ago when I use to rest out under the stars staring at a twinkling sky, with dreams as big as the moon.

  7. You certainly have an instantly recognizable voice – but there is so much of the English Pastoral in here, too: from John Clare to Gerard Manley Hopkins, and even a little of Dylan Thomas. So utterly evocative, too: bringing all your/my senses to the fore…. Thank you.

  8. Thank you - I wonder if the landscape helps shape that English 'voice' - or whether it is that the English 'voice' of the greats has helped us to see the landscape in a certain way. I would imagine that the learned and wise would say 'a bit of both' ... as they always seem to do. :)
